Workshop: Travel Demand Management: an on-ongoing challenge

Venue: University of Aberdeen (hosted by the Centre for Transport Research)

Date: Monday 23rd March 2009

Director

Prof John Nelson (Director, Centre for Transport Research, University of Aberdeen)

Co-Directors

Dr Neil Ferguson (Department of Civil Engineering, University of Strathclyde)
Dr Wafaa Saleh (Transport Research Institute, Napier University)

Outline of the workshop

Travel Demand Management (TDM) measures are well established in transport engineering and planning and are routinely promoted as “packages” within policies intended to encourage more sustainable travel behaviour. The Scottish Government have recently announced a programme of ‘Sustainable Travel Demonstration Communities’ which will implement packages of “hard” (e.g. infrastructure-type measures such as cycling and walking networks) and “soft” or “smarter” measures (e.g. personalised travel planning or car clubs) across 7 sites. However, the political and institutional issues which impact on the implementation of TDM measures remain an on-going challenge worldwide. The objective of the workshop therefore is to share best practice experience in the implementation and evaluation of TDM and contribute to future policy-making in Scotland and beyond.
